Art by the mentally and physically handicapped has become increasingly popular over the last several years. Unlike its foreign counterparts, however, "outsider art" in Japan is almost invariably linked to a care facility which organizes creative activities for its residents and in some cases acts as an agent for their work. Though this trend and the tendency to place artists in one of two boxes -- "in" or "out" -- is somewhat worrying, Touch the World, through March 7, 2010 at the Borderless Art Museum NO-MA, is a reassuring step in the right direction.

| For many years now, architecture students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Kyoto University of Art and Design (KUAD) have been participating in annual design workshops in Kyoto, focused on the preservation and revitalization of the city's architectural and urban heritage. In 2009, the 50th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Boston and Kyoto, workshops were held in both cities (Kyoto in July, Boston in October). The five student teams -- two from MIT, three from KUAD -- each made comparative studies of the traditional neighborhoods, as well as speculative design proposals for Kyoto. more... |

| My first encounter with the art of Rei Naito came too late to introduce it in this column before her most recent exhibition, Tout animal est dans le monde comme de l'eau à l'intérieur de l'eau, closed at the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura on January 24, 2010. But she exhibits frequently, has permanent installations in various parts of Japan, and as I discovered, her work is well worth seeking out. more... |
