At the press conference for "Garden of Painting: Japanese Art of the 00s," curator Atsuhiko Shima explained that it took him quite a while to decide on a title for his exhibition. "To begin with, I wanted a cool title, like 'Superflat' or 'Micropop,' but I realized that such a title doesn't fit my personality too well, so I went for the Japanese Kaiga no Niwa (Garden of Painting)," he said. more...

A visitor does not just stumble into the Prismic Gallery. It is located on the fifth floor of a nondescript building that backs up to Aoyama Cemetery on the edge of Gaienmae, Tokyo. Small and well lit with windows on two sides, the gallery lends itself to works of an intimate scale. Hake-no-Mori: Tokyo's Fertile Crescent

Out in the suburbs west of Tokyo is a curious geological formation, a steep bluff that runs for about 20 kilometers along the southwest edge of the Musashino Terrace above the Nogawa, a small tributary of the mighty Tama River. Geologists have named this escarpment the Kokubunji Cliff, but locals call it the hake, a word that literally means "drainage" but here refers to the abundant springs found along the bottom of the bluff. more...
