DNP Develops AndroidTM Compatible High Security microSD Card Kit

Japanese Domestic First

 

 Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce the October sales launch of a high security micro SD card development kit, known as TinySmart that is compatible with AndroidTM mounted terminals, and is also the first development of its type in Japan.

TinySmart is a micro SD card mounted with a high security basic operating system and is designed for smart card use. This development kit is packaged in a set with a device driver, making it easy to develop applications using similar functions to smart cards, such as identity verification on AndroidTM terminals mounted with TinySmart, and also data encryption.

[Developmental Background and Summary]

In recent years, we have seen the rapid spread of AndroidTM mounted terminals, such as smart phones and tablet computers, and the use of such terminals is on the rise at companies, organizations and educational institutions. At the same time, however, there is also an increased risk of illegal access and data leaks, leading to demands for more rigorous security in verification and settlement operations when using AndroidTM mounted terminals.

TinySmart is a high security micro SD card mounted with a secure chip and a high capacity flash memory.

The secure chip is a high security chip mount for smart cards for uses such as cash cards, credit cards, e-money, loyalty point services and network verification. As TinySmart takes the same format as standard microSD, it is also possible to make use of security functions similar to those in smart cards without a dedicated reader-writer as long as a microSD slot exists on the mobile device side.

By using this development kit, it is possible to develop AndroidTM applications requiring high security as applications with the TinySmart security function. For example, systems for logging in to the intranet from mobile devices, applications that encrypt high capacity contents or mission critical documents for storage and/or display purposes and a security system also exists for the protection of classified data in case the mobile terminal is lost or misplaced.

In November 2009, DNP developed the world' s first MULTOS edition TinySmart mounted multi OS for smart card uses, and followed this up in January 2011 with the development of the DNP Standard-9 V5 edition TinySmart mounted with a uniquely developed DNP operating system. Also, faced with corporate needs to develop in-house applications for TinySmart capable of being used with in-house equipment and systems, in January 2011 DNP developed a TinySmart development kit for Windows environments. DNP also aims to expand usage environment via the development of a TinySmart development kit compatible with the AndroidTM operating environment.

Looking ahead, DNP plans to market the TinySmart development kit to system integrators and equipment makers both in Japan and overseas, aiming for sales of approximately 1.5 billion yen over the next 3-years from TinySmart and peripheral business. The Company also plans to develop a driver for built-in operating systems in order to make it possible to use TinySmart with work dedicated terminals, such as handy terminals.

DNP has also developed the TinySmart e-book viewer, an AndroidTM version application combining TinySmart as a solution allowing for the viewing of mission critical documentation in companies, and will display this solution at Financial Information Technology 2011 to be held at the Tokyo International Forum from October 19.
