DNP Launches Sales of High Security Contactless Smart Card Mounted with Next-Generation FeliCa IC Chip

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has launched sales of a high security contactless smart card mounted with a next-generation FeliCa chip manufactured by Sony Corporation (Sony). And in yet another domestic first for DNP, the newly developed product has passed the FeliCa Performance Test, used by Sony to assess communications capability. Sales were launched November 15.

[Product Features and Major Specifications]

  • Regarding mutual authentication and cryptographic communication between smart cards and reader-writers, the next-generation FeliCa IC chip is compatible with the  higher security Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)(*1) in addition to existing Data Encryption Standard (DES). The newly developed product has also been accredited with assessment level EAL6+ of the Common Criteria (ISO/IEC 15408), that is the international security related standard, and maintains the industry's highest levels for security performance.
  • It is possible to personalize three types of contactless card compatible with the following encryption formats; 1, DES alone, 2, AES alone, or 3, both formats.
  • It is also possible to use existing reader-writers, such as DES encryption format FeliCa compatibility systems.
  • The newly developed product is also equipped with a security migration function to enable shifts from existing DES encryption format systems to AES encryption based new systems following the personalization of the card, and without the need to re-personalize the same.

[Forward Looking Events]

DNP will market the newly developed product to sectors where strong security is demanded, such as cards issued by financial institutions where the priority is on safety and performance, as well as ID cards, aiming for sales of approximately 3 billion yen over the next three years.

DNP will add the newly developed high-function card to our existing FeliCa IC chip mounted card lineup, and aims to develop a smart card business tailor made to fit our client's needs.

(*1) AES: A new generation common key encryption format using the same key for encryption and decryption. A successor standard to DES.
By applying the Data Encryption Standard (DES,) used as symmetric -key cryptography, in triplicate this format makes it possible to intensify encryption strength.
