DNP Develops Innovative Internet VPN for IoT and IoE Operators

Provides secure direct communications between multiple devices without a relay server

 

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has developed an internet Virtual Private Network (VPN), facilitating the low cost configuration of secure communication environments between applications and mobile devices.

The new product is comprised of a Software Development Kit (SDK) built into applications and mobile devices to encrypt communications data, and a cloud environment or a VPN management server installed on the premises. The VPN management server is capable of automatically authenticating multiple mobile devices, making it possible to conduct internet communications in a sophisticated information security environment.

[Background]

Highly confidential information, such as personal information, has so far mainly used dedicated circuits. In recent years, however, low cost internet circuits that employ VPN technology have been used. (See Diagram1). This usage format requires the setting of a variety of information, such as VPN device channels, and as a result, one issue has been the generation of fresh tasks, each time the network structure is changed or user bases expanded.

In order to resolve this issue, DNP has developed an internet VPN facilitating the low cost configuration of secure communication environments between communications devices. At the same time, an SDK built in to applications and mobile devices boosts security features. By pre-registering the mobile device with the VPN management server, it is possible to conduct internet VPN between such devices at any time. (See diagram 2).

In addition to base-to-base communications, the SDK makes it easy to achieve a safe communications environment for the rapidly expanding Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Everything (IoE) communications. Server software for the newly developed internet VPN is compatible with Linux, while the SDK is compatible with a variety of operating systems, including iOS, Android, Windows and Linux.

- Achieving secure unified control of communications equipment with ease

From the VPN management server1 administrator's screen, it is possible to register all communications equipment and set up groups in a simple manner. All registered communications equipment automatically performs e-certificate authentication, dedicated terminal authentication, as well as IDs and passwords.

- Realizes internet VPN for multiple devices in a simultaneous manner

As a result of employing a unique connection technology, it has been made possible to configure an internet VPN between multiple devices, such as smart phones and tablet terminals without going through a relay server. As this makes it possible to configure a variety of networks, apart from improved convenience, direct communication can be made with the necessary counterparty, which helps reduce the risk of information leaks at IoT and IoE operators.

- Possible to utilize existing networks

It is possible to use the new product without altering existing networks, even if the network address undergoes a NAT switch when communicating between a Local Area Network (LAN) environment and an internet environment.

DNP will market the newly developed internet VPN to service operators, software and equipment developers, and sales agents for Information and Communication Technology. The Company will also promote integration with products and services from each company, aiming for sales of 700 million yen in FY 2018.
