DNP Launches SA Grade for Microorganism Detection Film Medium at Food and Beverage Manufacturers

Has acquired AOAC PTM accreditation for existing three types

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has newly launched a staphylococcus aureus (SA) Grade used in the measurement of staphylococcus aureus, as a new addition to the currently available microorganism detection film media series, designed to improve the efficiency of quality-driven microorganism detections at food and beverage manufacturers.

Following the aerobic viable count (AC) Grade for measuring viable bacteria and Coliform Count (CC) Grade for measuring coliform group bacteria, DNP has acquired Performance Tested Methods (PTM) accreditation for the E.coli and coliform count (EC) Grade, designed to measure Escherichia coli, and colitis germs from the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists1 (AOAC), the US based global authority on method validation and laboratory quality assurance.

[New Product Development]

In September 2014 DNP launched a microorganism detection film media2 targeting increased inspection efficiency for petri dish cultivated bacteria, and a reduction in petri dish waste at the post-inspection stage, at food manufacturers that perform microorganism detections in order to maintain food safety and security. The newly developed product kit coats a sheet-form film with the necessary nutrient components for microorganism culture, and compared to currently available mediums using petri dishes is simpler to handle, and facilitates the implementation of testing tasks in a reliable and efficient manner. In June 2015 the Company has also developed a colony count system3 that automatically performs a film media-based count for colonies that are micro-bacterial clusters, which had previously been counted manually in the post-microbial culture stage. In this latest development, DNP has launched an SA Grade to count staphylococcus aureus.

[Film Media]

DNP developed film media achieves reduced handling burdens and improves inspection operational efficiency, removing the need for pre-processing by coating a sheet-form film with a gelling agent and nutritional elements, which substitutes for agar-prepared pre-processing that requires experienced workers' skill.

<Product Lineup and Pricing (excluding tax)>

SA Grade

75,000 yen (per 500 sheet pack)

AC Grade

CC Grade

Each 75,000 yen (per 1,000 sheet pack)

EC Grade

47,500 yen (per 500 sheet pack)

[New Product Features]

In pre-testing, SA Grade displays a high detection rate, including positive reactions, even with staphylococcus aureus that could not be counted in currently available agar-based cultivation due to no appearance of an egg yolk reaction. SA Grade also maintains high growth restraint capabilities against other bacteria than staphylococcus aureus that display a positive reaction in agar-based cultivation, and as a result, boasts an extremely low false positive rate compared to agar-based cultivation.

[Looking Ahead]

DNP has positioned Knowledge and Communication, Food and Healthcare, Lifestyle and Mobility, and the Environment and Energy as business growth areas, and is engaged in the creation of new values. As part of those efforts, the Company will market the four grades of microorganism detection film media mainly to food, beverage and snack manufacturers, restaurant chains, and along with revenue linked to colony count systems aims for total cumulative sales of 300 million yen in the coming three-year period.
