DNP Takes over 3M Japan Security System Business Targeting Libraries

Provides anti-theft library system

DNP Trading Co., Ltd. (DNP Trading), a company responsible for the trading functions of the Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) Group, has taken over a security system business that targets libraries from 3M Japan Limited (3M Japan), as of November 2016.
DNP Trading will continue to stably supply security systems for libraries, along with the related consumables and services, through existing agents and sales outlets. Furthermore, the entire DNP group will engage in promoting the penetration of the system throughout the domestic market.

[Background]

3M of the US has provided anti-theft library systems for preventing unauthorized removal of books from libraries, and which also manage loan and return of books, for more than 40 years. This system has been adopted by more than 23,000 libraries around the world, and has developed a firm reputation. 3M Japan has also operated the anti-theft library system business in Japan, which is at present in use at more than 1,600 domestic libraries.
In November 2015, Rotkreuz, Switzerland-based Bibliotheca, acquired the security system business for libraries from 3M, which further required a transfer of the business in Japan. The DNP Group companies, Maruzen-Yushodo Company, Limited (Maruzen-Yushodo) and TRC Library Service Inc. (TRC) had acted as agents for the 3M security system, and successfully delivered the system to many Japanese libraries. And as a result, it was deemed to be a natural move for DNP Trading, to take over the Japan-based library system business.
DNP Trading will continue to supply products and services in a stable manner, not only to Maruzen-Yushodo and TRC, but also to all existing sales outlets. And with the cooperation of Bibliotheca Japan, founded by Bibliotheca on the framework of 3M engineers engaged in the supply of security systems to Japanese libraries, DNP Trading will establish a scheme for the supply of technical support, along with a maintenance service, for the system. At the same time, the entire DNP Group will make efforts to promote the penetration of the system throughout the domestic market.
Among the members of the DNP Group, DNP has developed and provides an original system for libraries based on a 920 MHz Ultra High Frequency (UHF) band with a longer read range, which works to reduce the workload at libraries as it can read multiple IC tags attached to library books. DNP also offers a digital library service, while Maruzen-Yushodo and TRC are also focused on library businesses, offering library outsourcing and system services, along with book sales.

[Security System for Libraries]

The system is designed to detect and prevent the unauthorized removal of library books, by attaching to them 3M Tattle-Tape™ Security Strips, which are thin magnetic security markers. Apart from being used at approximately 1,200 university libraries in Japan, the system is also in use at numerous private libraries. The service will provide 3M Tattle-Tape™ Security Strips along with security equipment to prevent the unauthorized removal of library books.
3M Tattle-Tape™ Security Strips can detect illicitly removed library books, even if they have been inserted into metal suitcases, and as a result, DNP will also propose the system for important document management uses to companies such as financial institutions.

[Looking Ahead]

DNP Trading aims for sales of 1.0 billion yen in FY 2020 from security system related sales to libraries.
