Nippon DOM and DNP Develop A Washable Heat-Transfer Hologram That Can Be Attached to Fabrics and Clothing
[ go to Japanese release ]

Nippon DOM Co., Ltd. (Nippon DOM) and Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) have jointly developed heat-transfer holographic labels that can be attached to fabric products such as clothing, bags, and shoes and that can withstand both washing and dry-cleaning. This new hologram will be available on the market from May this year.

[Background]
Brand tags and labels attached to products such as clothing, bags, and shoes not only provide information on the brand name, size, and country of manufacture, but also play a role in preventing forged and counterfeited goods. Losses incurred due to the proliferation of forged and counterfeit goods are growing by the year, and businesses have been searching for anti-counterfeiting solutions that will allow the average consumer to instantly recognize an authentic product.
In answer to this need, Nippon DOM and DNP have combined the know-how on heat-transfer labels for fabrics of the former and the advanced security hologram technology of the latter to create high-security, wash-proof, heat-transfer hologram labels that can be attached to soft fabric products such as clothing.

[Features of the washable Heat-Transfer Holographic Label]
  • Holographic labels that withstand washing and dry-cleaning
Conventional hologram products were generally intended for use on paper, plastic, and metal surfaces, and none had been developed for attachment to soft materials such as fabric. For the washable Heat-Transfer hologram, the quality of the hologram itself has been improved, and it has been paired with an adhesive that is able to significantly withstand washing and dry-cleaning (*1).
  • Balancing Security and Design
In addition to providing advanced security, holograms enable the creation of brand logos and other designs that have a strong impact on the consumer – allowing for the inclusion of high-brightness images with 3-D effects, and dynamic motion when viewed from different angles.
  • Achieving a Convenient Identification Tool for Consumers Attached Directly to the Product
Currently, holograms can be found on price tags and boxes of products such as clothing and shoes for anti-counterfeiting purposes; however, the washable Heat-Transfer hologram offers even higher security than conventional applications, since it can be attached directly to the product. Thus, consumers will be able to purchase the product with greater assurance they are getting the “real thing.”

[Price]
15-30 yen/15 × 15 mm label, when purchased in lots of 1 million or more.
(Does not include initial costs such as design, master recording, and data processing)

[Forward Looking Developments]
Nippon DOM and DNP will actively market the washable Heat-Transfer hologram to global businesses manufacturing exclusive fashion products and sports equipment and to security uniform manufacturers, with a joint sales goal of ¥300 million for FY 2009. DNP will include this product in its exhibition at the 4th RFID Solutions EXPO to be held at Tokyo Big Sight on May 13-15 (Wed.-Fri.), 2009.

[About Nippon DOM and DNP]
Nippon DOM is a comprehensive manufacturer of printed, woven, and heat-transfer brand labels for companies that produce apparel, bags, and shoes. Nippon DOM has accumulated know-how for reproducing brand logos and designs in labels and attaching them to various surfaces on the above products. The company has also expanded its business into the production of decorative accessories for such products.
DNP is a leading company in hologram production, and currently manufactures and markets Lippman holograms (*2) and embossed holograms (*3). DNP’s holograms are used in security applications aimed at anti-counterfeiting measures for various payment devices such as gift certificates, cash vouchers, and credit cards, and in industrial design applications such as magazine covers, packages, and premium goods.

(*1) Fastness to washing and dry cleaning
The test of fastness to washing was performed in accordance with JIS L 0844 A-2, and for dry cleaning, to JIS L 0217 402. The test results are valid only for standard fabric materials, and additional tests will be required to confirm fastness to materials under conditions of use for the intended application.

(*2) Lippman holograms
Lippman holograms are produced by coating special polymers onto a film, and recording interference patterns in the polymer layers as differences in refractive indices. When light passing through the polymer layers is diffracted by the interference patterns, holographic images are reproduced. Lippman holograms offer high 3-D expression in the vertical and horizontal directions as well as depth, and the reproduced images give impressions of real-life solidity. The special materials and manufacturing processes required for producing these holograms makes them extremely difficult to counterfeit. The superior real-life impressions of the holographic images also offer freedom in design, and thus Lippman holograms have received worldwide acclaim for both their security and their design performance.

(*3) Embossed holograms
Embossed holograms are produced by etching optical interference patterns as fine relief patterns on a film surface. The image is reproduced with superior horizontal solidity and is displayed in a rainbow of colors that changes with the angle of view. This type of hologram is well suited to mass-production, and so it has been widely used not only for anti-counterfeiting applications but also for design applications.
