2019 DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion Graphic Culture Research Grant

DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion provides grants to research related to graphic design and graphic arts from diverse disciplines, regardless of humanities or science, to contribute to the development of graphic design and graphic art culture in Japan and around the world.

Target Research Fields

Category A: Research on graphic design or graphic art in general

Research on a wide range of academic fields related to graphic culture, including graphic design, typography, printing, printmaking and photography. For example: art history, design history, aesthetics, art theory, museology, art education, comparative culture theory, image engineering, technique materials & conservation science, psychology, law, economics, etc.

Category B: Research on graphic culture-related archives

For example: creation of an archive related to graphic culture, including graphic design, typography, printing, printmaking and photography; study and analysis of historical materials contained in an existing archive; basic research on archives per se, including proposals of an organization method or data model.

Eligibility Grant candidates must be scholars - either individuals or groups - engaging in research relating to graphic design or graphic art.

(1)Scholars affiliated with a university (faculty or graduate student)
(2)Art museum curator
(3)Researchers who have already completed graduate school. A recommendation is required from a university professor or chief curator of an art museum.
(4)Other qualified candidates
Grant amount Award amounts vary according to the content of the intended research, with an upper limit of 500,000 JPY per year. Grant awards to fund a given research project will be renewable once at the most. Plans to apply for continuation grants should be indicated when submitting the initial application.
Grant period (1) The initial grant period is from November, 2019 to March 31, 2021.
(2) The period for a continuing grant is from November, 2020 to March 31, 2022.
Application method The application forms can be downloaded using the links below. Completed applications should be returned by post to the Foundation's address, clearly marked as containing a "Grant Application." Applications are not accepted by e-mail or fax.
Application period May 1 to July 17, 2019 (last acceptable arrival date)
Selection method Grant winners will be selected by a screening committee.
Results announcement October, 2019 (subject to change)
