The 48th Exhibition Nobuyoshi Kikuchi Exhibition “Shelf” Bound Books February 6 - 24 ,1990

While a book's cover is the container for a work, it also shoulders the task of catching people's eyes in a bookstore and making them want to hold, leaf through and read it. Practical or entertaining books are united by readers and objectives but literary books are conversely united by robbing people of the objective they had in reading. One does not reach for a literary work that can be understood just by looking at its cover. There are as many images of a literary work as there are readers who have finished reading the work. Cover designs do not come about just by explanations or interpretations of the image understood by the binder. With the socialized image of the author as a fulcrum, uneasiness must be created in the viewer through the way the title and letters look, the illustrations and colors, and by creating a new discrepancy with the texture of the materials. Uneasiness should be the ferry taking people's minds to a desire to read.
