The 56th Exhibition Katsumi Asaba's New Works Terrible Typography in Asia October 2 - 27 ,1990

For twenty days in June of this year, we organized a group centered around Tatsuo Nishida, the Kyoto University linguist, to visit minorities in Yunnan and Sichuan in China and investigate hieroglyphics still in use. This exhibition was put together with three kinds of letters, mainly Tonba letters of the Naxi tribe, Seika letters that fell into disuse 700 years ago on the Silk Road, and Roro letters which are still used by the Yi tribe in Xichang. It takes 4 days to get to were the Naxi tribe is based from Japan. They lived in the 2000m Lijiang Highlands at the base of the Yulongshan. We met the 80 year old tonba (shaman). My eyes flew open with surprise when we encountered the fascinating letters. I wanted to live there and become a tonba.
