The 87th Exhibition Imagination of Letters July 2 - 28 ,1993

Japanese letters are incredibly diverse. To Chinese characters, katakana and hiragana, the alphabet has also been added recently. Writing can be vertical or horizontal. Old, new, Eastern or Western-the styles abound. The quarterly, "Vertical and Horizontal Type." put out by Morisawa, the phototypesetter, has looked into letters, a large aspect of graphic design, from many angles. Commemorating its 10th anniversary, 41 creators, who appeared in the magazine, created 41 posters with letters as their theme. The new posters made through the eyes of the creators who represent the present, explore the essence of letters and give an impression of a new form of communication. Developing these in various ways, new worlds unfold with unique images.
