The 94th Exhibition The 6th Tokyo Typodirectors Club February 4 - 26 ,1994

"Tokyo--The Port for the World's Letters." This was the catch phrase that Jun Maki came up with for the '93 annual. Outstanding works created by domestic and international artists were sent in again this year to the Tokyo TDC, The hall where the works were displayed was truly a "port for the world's letters." While there are still not many from Asia or Africa, we can look forward to more in the future. The Members Gold Award went to Tsuguya Inoue. The artist's sharp eyes were directed toward a criticism of modern civilization. The General Division Gold Award went to Matthew Carter's "Sophia." This masterful new work achieves a type design covering the three generations from letterpress type to photoengraving and digital letters. Petrograph discovered in Kyushu is now in the spotlight in Japan but this predicts the advent of a new age in which letters, Man's legacy, is looked at once more.
