The 176th Exhibition 2001 Yasuhiko Kida January 12(Fri.) - 31(Wed.),2001

When Ikko Tanaka asked me to be "the first shot at the 21st century," I had a sense of anticipation. I didn't especially think about making a statement to the computer-dominated world of graphics. I just care about the basics in creating and use the most classical and orthodox of methods such as woodcut prints and drawings using every kind of material. In this exhibition, in addition to printed material such as calendars and posters in which such principles of mine are evident, digitized and enlarged woodcut prints were displayed around the hall. This resulted in being able to show a "me" that is different from what you might see in an exhibition of original pictures. Many people strongly supported my new attempts at using traditional Japanese painting techniques with those of the West and also the latest in electronic technology. I wonder if I have inherited any of the now late Ikko Tanaka's creative aspirations.
