The 249th Exhibition Katsu Kimura: Toi Boxes March 6(Tue.) - 28(Wed.),2007

The subtitle of this exhibition - a pun involving the Japanese word toi, which means "posing a question" - was created by copywriter Jun Maki in the course of our ongoing discussions. Once the title was settled, the direction of the exhibition itself fell into place. I decided to take the toys and amusements I had created over many years, remake them, and show them in "toi (toy) boxes" so that many people could see them, touch them and enjoy them. It was also as an outgrowth of this exhibition at ggg that "Putting Typos," an interactive installation composed of pieces of cardboard, came to adorn a wall of a kindergarten in Gifu. In December, on my return from the exhibition when it was held at ddd in Osaka, I visited the kindergarten, and by that time a wall 2.4 meters high and 5.3 meters wide had already been completed, resulting in colorful wall art of the kindergarteners' own making. Since then, the image has been reworked repeatedly by the children, and hearing how much fun they are getting from it, I am happy above all to have been blessed with this opportunity that came out of this exhibition.
