The 250th Exhibition Tokyo Type Directors Club 2007 April 3(Tue.) - 25(Wed.),2007

Both internationally well-known designers and anonymous students are all examined equally. This is the beauty of the TDC. We judge all the works simply through the excellence of the typography. One of the important factors is humanity behind the works. It doesn't matter whether the work is drawn on a stone or is a series of 25 full-color posters, whether it is commercial or "personal," the truth and honesty, and therefore its quality, come from an open heart. The TDC pushes the boundaries of what is typography and typo-graphics and it is this reason why international designers, including myself, enter work for this remarkable competition. Humans first acquired consciousness and then language and thereafter the word. It was a quest for certainty, for control over our world. And from this control evolved method, a way of formulizing this control. As a result, most of design competitions focus on method, which is restrictive and self-defining. The TDC is not about method but process. Process is not "absolute" but open-ended and questioning. For me the TDC is the place to extend my senses and my knowledge. And to find out what is possible. It is a perpetual source of inspiration.
