Activities |
| Filled with ancient historical sites interwoven with the beauty of nature, Nara is known as the birthplace of Japanese sentiment. Expressing the essence of this was what Irie approached graphically in his photo works. This museum preserves all his photographs and presents them to the public in revolving displays. Besides these, the museum also exhibits photo works of natural beauty by many other photographers, Silk Road related works and exhibitions for international exchange. The Hi-Vision Gallery was added to the facility in April of 1993, which has allowed Irie's work to be seen on still picture images on a screen with clear resolution. Specially created short programs presenting photographs thematically canbe individually selected for viewing. |

Purpose |
| For half a century, master photographer Taikichi Irie imaged distinctive forms and moods of the ancient Yamato area around Nara. Then Irie's generous donation of his entire collection of photo works to the city of Nara became the impetus for creating the Nara City Museum of Photography. The Museum designed by Kisho Kurokawa opend in spring 1992. Here in Nara still breathes a rich historical inheritance dating back to the great artistic and religious flowering of the Tempyo Era in the eighth century. The Nara City Museum of Photography is a focal point highlighting the individual citizens' culture that continually preserves this legacy. |
