An exhibition titled "Beyond Reason", is a collection by Hans Prinzhorn, a German art psycho-therapist. The exhibition created a big sensation from the start, being taken up by art magazines, as well as general magazines and newspapers. Prinzhorn, a psycho-analyst and art historian, was particularly knowledgeable about modern art, and he was interested in using art for treatment by encouraging the mentally ill patients to create artworks. In this exhibition, over 200 pieces collected from his patients, from 1890 to 1920, are displayed. These strongly influenced the works of the Surrealists, such as Max Ernst. While exhibitions of artworks created by mentally ill patients are frequently held today, this event is quite different from the conventional exhibitions, and is gaining popularity in England because Prinzhorn, being the author of "Artistry of the Mentally Ill", was a pioneer of this treatment. The interest towards this unique exhibition is perhaps attributable to its success in establishing the theoretical relationship between psycho-analysis and art.

Due to the brilliance of the exhibition, <<Beyond Reason>> , the Howard Hodgkin Exhibition may be at a disadvantage, being overshadowed by the former. As the winner of the Turner Prize, Hodgkin is evaluated as an authentic successor of the lineage of British painters, from Turner to Bacon. However, it seems that the response from the general public does not meet up to the expectations. This is the first full-scale retrospective for the artist, covering his works from 1975 to 1995. His style of his brushstroke sometimes being forced out of the canvas, even painting the frame, still maintains its energy, but there is some doubt whether this kind of approach towards the "painting" maintains a contemporariness today.

At the Victoria & Albert Museum, a retrospective exhibition of American photography is being held, featuring pieces from New York's MoMA. As the title shows, this exhibition is excluding the first 30 years and the last 30 years. Although the exhibition features works worth seeing, such as the photographs by Diane Arbus, it is disappointing that it omitted not only works by artistic photographers such as Nan Goldin or Cindy Sherman, but also the journalistic photographs from war, such as the ones from the Vietnam War, and even the pictures of Hollywood movie stars. Paradoxically speaking, in order to describe the history of American photography, would it not be enough to feature the journalistic photographs and the movie star bromides?
