takahiro fujiwara | |
| Takahiro Fujiwara grins a lot. There is something of the naughty schoolboy in him, which is ever present in his works too. The prominent theme is sex. Naughty. More specifically, sex in Tokyo - which possibly is naughtier still. The real motivation though is twofold - to explore human desire and social restraint, and to make people laugh. His works are based around adult toys, toys which Fujiwara calls 'cute' - in English we would be more likely to say they make you giggle. And they do. A Tokyo version of dirty postcards, perhaps - but with an edge. It is that edge which perhaps many foreigners find hard to reconcile. Tokyo's strange mix of conservatism and "anything goes" grinds on our conscience ... can you really do that? You can, of course. The point is should you? Undoubtably these are questions that need to be asked about today's Tokyo, but to all appearances nobody is really asking them. Perhaps that is the point that is most difficult to understand. Fujiwara holds up his own kind of mirror - the sort that hangs from the ceiling of a Love Hotel. Does the reflection show things up for what they really are, or simply add to the fun? Takahiro Fujiwara has an exhibition coming up in March. |
