Purpose |
|
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (the new Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum) opened on March 18, 1995 with a major survey of contemporary Japanese art. The new museum is located in Kiba Park, in the east area of Tokyo. This is the first public contemporary art museum in Tokyo. Because the city of Tokyo lacked an institution which could provide a systematic survey of contemporary art with displays from a permanent collection, the citizens of Tokyo and professinals both inside and outside japan voiced a strong desire for the construction of an art museum in Japan's capital city which would provide information on the latest trends in arts. In response, the New Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum Construction Deliberation Committee in 1987 proposed the construction of a new art museum as a site for international cultural and artistic exchange. The purpose of the newly built Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, is to collect, preserve, and exhibit works of art with a focus on contemporary work. It will give the citizens of Tokyo greater opportunities to see high-quality works of art and become more involved with art in a variety of ways, stimulating artistic activity and helping establish a firmer base for the growth of art and culture in Tokyo and entire county. |
