DNP Develops Liquid Compatible High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package to Supply Colgate-Palmolive in Southeast Asia

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has successfully developed a liquid compatible High-Gloss Barrier polypropylene (PP) mono-material packaging that maintains equivalent oxygen and water vapor barrier properties to conventional multi-material packaging meeting requirements of global consumer products maker Colgate-Palmolive Company (Colgate-Palmolive). The new product with the distinctive metallic design is being used in shampoo and conditioner sachets in the Southeast Asian market by Colgate-Palmolive.

[Development and Implementation]

More companies are coming to view the problem of marine plastics pollution, this is feeding into an acceleration in global efforts to recycle used plastic as a resource. In particular, numerous US and European multinational companies are advocating environmentally-conscious corporate policies, and have made declarations stating that their packaging will be switched to 100% recyclable materials. Colgate-Palmolive is in the forefront of these efforts, and has announced that all of their packaging will be converted to recyclable, reusable, or compostable designs by 2025.

Since 2018 DNP has developed and offered mono-material packaging with improved recyclability, adding a variety of functions designed to target foods and daily necessities. In this latest development, Colgate-Palmolive has supported the following development assessments overseas to market the High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package.

The newly developed High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package exhibits the same physical characteristics and external appearance as the metallic design film package sachets, based on aluminum metalized polyethylene terephthalate (PET), currently marketed by Colgate-Palmolive. This new PP mono-material packaging has garnered high ratings for its superior barrier properties that in addition to retaining the fragrance of the contents can also be produced on existing filling machines.

[Product Features]

By capitalizing on DNP converting technology1, the newly developed High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package achieves high level oxygen and water vapor barrier properties without using aluminum foil.

The new High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package also achieves the same metallic effect as film packaging based on aluminum metalized PET.

High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package is liquid compatible, making it possible to apply to a variety of purposes, including daily necessities such as shampoo and conditioner, foods, powdered drinks and viscous materials.

It is also possible to modify the High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package so as to make it compatible with Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging, or CEFLEX guidelines, being a European consortium promoting the recycling economy in the flexible packaging industry. In addition, High-Gloss Barrier PP Mono-Material Package has been certified for recycling suitability by Intersoh, a German recycling certification company, and has acquired the Made for Recycling mark.
