DNP, University of Tokyo Press, Maruzen-Yushodo in Full Scale Launch of Original University Teaching Materials Production Support Service

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP), University of Tokyo Press and Maruzen-Yushodo Company, Limited (Maruzen-Yushodo), are pleased to announce the enhancement of the partners' copyright processing menu for the support service for the production of original paper-based and digital university classroom teaching materials and that they will commence full scale marketing activities.
In October 2015, the partners capitalized on existing publications, academic papers and website-based information to launch a service designed to support a range of activities from the planning of original classroom materials through their editing, production and publishing to their ultimate distribution. In this latest development, apart from enhancing the service’s copyright processing menu, the partners have also organized the teaching materials production menu and pricing.

Background

At present, teaching materials used in university lectures are, in many cases, prepared by the teachers themselves, based on information obtained from publications and websites in line with specific lecture needs. This system, however, led to the issue of an increased work burden for teachers, and in order to overcome this challenge, in October 2015, the partners developed a service designed to support the production of original teaching materials, which has gone on to develop a number of orders and inquiries.
Looking ahead, remote teaching systems linking multiple universities via the worldwide web and Learning Management Systems (LMS) that facilitate web-based student learning progress management along with the viewing of teaching and classroom materials are expected to become increasingly popular. Further digitization needs are also expected for original teaching materials in line with the expansion of such systems. At the same time, as digital teaching materials can be easily reproduced, they require more care in relation to copyrights compared to paper-based materials. And in order to respond to such needs, the partners have enhanced their copyright processing menu related to the teaching materials production service for educational institutions. They have also gone one step further and organized the pricing of the service menu, along with the paper and digital materials production menu to facilitate easier adoption by universities.

Service Summary

The partners will capitalize on existing publications, academic papers and website-based information to support the production of original teaching materials in the optimum format, regardless of whether in a paper or digital media. And DNP, University of Tokyo Press and Maruzen-Yushodo, will cooperate from planning, through editing, proofing, production, publication through to the distribution to provide the enhanced service.
DNP will be responsible for editing and proofing systems, the production of paper and digital teaching materials, and the provision of digital material delivery systems. University of Tokyo Press will undertake editing and production of classroom materials, along with copyright processing, while Maruzen-Yushodo will take charge of consultation and sales contacts for universities, and will provide copyrighted materials, images and charts.
Service Features are as follows:

Saves on teaching materials production labor by teachers, while third party participation by the partners is expected to lead to quality improvements.

Apart from being able to offer the enhanced service in a print-on-demand format from small to large lots, it is also possible to offer the service in digital media.

In this latest development, the partners have added a menu function that judges whether copyright infringements exist regarding the information used, and then go on to proceed with copyright processing formalities as required. Increased awareness of copyright issues helps facilitate the creation of teaching materials designed for digitization or publication or both.

An academic publishing service with the objective of promoting bookstore distribution and the publication of research results is also available as an add-on option.

The service will also support the establishment of a teaching materials development center to help university staff deal with teaching material production requests from teachers, and publication requests, while also supporting editing and proofing operations. At the same time, the partners will also provide support for the establishment of university-based press groups and will provide various copyright-related seminars.

Pricing

Pricing will be set based on production lot sizes for paper-based teaching materials, the existence of digital teaching materials, along with the scope of consulting, planning and copyrights, as well as proofing frequency requirements.
It is expected that on a production lot of 100 units a price of 4,000 yen to 5,000 yen will serve as a reference price.

Looking Ahead

In addition to teaching materials production, the partners will endeavor to further enhance other services, including support for publications designed to boost the academic reputation of teachers, the analysis of the usage status of digital teaching materials, and the establishment of a teaching materials bank for the collection and provision of numerous copyrighted contents. Maruzen-Yushodo will take charge of sales to universities, aiming for sales of 200 million yen in fiscal year 2017.
