DNP to Support Ikebukuro Smart Map

Part of Rikkyo University district renewal project

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce its support for the Ikebukuro Smart Map, a regional renewal project, being promoted by a research group lead by Prof. Akira Hiroe at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, by providing an O2O (Online to Offline) promotion services and NFC tagged book covers.

[Ikebukuro Smart Map]

DNP will distribute NFC tagged book covers to consumers with the cooperation of local book stores. By waving an NFC compatible smart phone over an NFC tagged book cover, it is possible to view information about restaurants and tourist spots in the area nearby Ikebukuro railway station, and promote O2O efforts designed to guide customers towards retail outlets. The book covers are printed with a map prepared with the help of Rikkyo University students, which includes their recommendations on Ikebukuro's deep root spots, and which are designed as a guide to visitors looking to stroll around the Ikebukuro area. By combining a printed map with superior browsing features with digital contents for smart phones that are capable of storing large amounts of information, and which have superior searchability features, it is possible to provide local information in an efficient or smart manner.

Apart from providing a platform that integrates the necessary functions for O2O services using NFC, DNP will also offer support for the production of NFC tagged book covers, and event posters, as well as planning support.

[Overview of O2O Service Platform]

The platform targeting O2O services delivers product, store information and coupons to consumer smart phones when they wave an NFC compatible smart phone over an NFC tagged poster, or such POP as the book covers used on this occasion, and helps guide customers to retail stores. The information can be altered depending on installment location or time, facilitating the effective, or smart, promotion of events such as limited time sales. It is also possible to offer the service to visitors from overseas, as NFC is an international short-wave wireless communication standard.

[Looking Ahead]

DNP positions this activity as an O2O promotion originated by book stores with deep ties to the local community, and in addition to analyzing the implementation effect, aims to provide a value-added service in the form of a hands-on reading experience. Beginning with the publishing industry, DNP will promote the adoption of the platform by advertising agencies, retailers, financial institutions, along with the tourist industry, aiming for adoption by 20 companies in the 3-year period to the end of the business year for 2016.
