DNP Launches New Information Distribution Service
Combines digital watermark technology and beacon-emitted radio waves
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has taken applications that distribute smart phone contents using digital watermarking technology for images, and added functions for reading off digital watermarks embedded in audio and those for receiving beacon-emitted radio waves, and will bundle these together in a package that will be distributed in the App Store from February 17. An Android version of this application is scheduled for a May 2015 launch.
DNP commenced a service from 2011 in which an application recognizes digital watermarks embedded in printed materials when photographed with a smart phone, and then distributes the related contents. A generic application has been available since 2012. A function for reading off digital watermarks embedded in audio was developed in 2014, and this function has been incorporated into developed applications and made available in customized-formats that match the needs of individual companies. In this latest development, functions for reading off digital watermarks embedded in audio and those for receiving beacon-emitted radio waves have been added to the generic application to improve user convenience.
Companies that utilize DNP information distribution service that read off digital watermarks of printed materials, might also be in a position to develop unique smart phone applications, themselves. However, by using a generic application it is possible to reduce application development lead-time and costs. In this latest development it has been made possible to use not only printed materials, but also audio and beacons. Consumers can now access contents immediately by initiating contact with these data media, and as a result, this new development helps facilitate the easier acquisition of information in a more detailed format. In addition to realizing Online to Offline (O2O) promotions linked to a diverse data media, companies can also analyze data media and contents used by consumers, and link these to improvements in marketing measures.
DNP will combine printed materials, contents production, campaign planning and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), such as operating event organizer desks, along with tasks for proposing improvement measures based on access to log analysis, to provide total corporate O2O promotion support.
The new applications maintain the following functions;
1, New function for reading off audio digital watermarks and distributing contents
Digital watermark data is embedded into audio source data, such as that in TV, radio, digital signage and in-house broadcasts. When smart phones sense this audio, the embedded digital watermark is read off, and the contents distributed. As long as consumers are within reception range, it is possible to distribute the contents to multiple consumers at the same time.
2, New function for receiving beacon-emitted radio waves and distributing contents
When consumers approach beacons installed at facilities and/or retail outlets, smart phones automatically receive the beacon-emitted radio waves via a Bluetooth function, and distribute the contents. It is not necessary for consumers to wave their smart phones over the beacon. The optimal information is distributed to match the consumer' s location.
3, Reading off digital watermarks embedded in printed materials and distributing contents
Digital watermark data is embedded into printed material, such as magazines, pamphlet photographs, and illustrations, and the contents distributed when photographed with a smart phone.
DNP aims for sales of 500 million yen in the 3-years to 2016 from the newly developed applications and related services.
