DNP Develops Cashless Payment System by Company ID Cards for Canteens, Vending Machines, and Convenience Stores Operating on an In-House Basis

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has added a new function to the current cashless payment system for use at canteens and convenience stores operating on company property. The new function will allow staff to perform cashless payment with their company ID cards, while also improving the operability of payment terminals.

[Developmental Background]

More and more companies are adopting smart cards as company IDs, and there are increasing needs to use these smart ID cards in cashless payments at in-house canteens, kiosks and vending machines. DNP launched a cashless payment system for use with a variety of facilities operating within company premises in 2005, and has built up a track record of adoptions at more than 100 companies. In this latest development, DNP has added a new function to the currently available system designed to respond to developments such as the increasing opening of nationwide convenience store outlets within company premises. The new function connects a dedicated reader-writer to existing Point of Sale (POS) cash registers, to allow charges to be directly deducted from payrolls via the use of smart ID cards. At the same time, operability of payment terminals and management computer screens has also been improved.

[New Functions]

The new function has revamped the current administration software of cashless payment system and made it possible to be used at nationwide convenience store outlets that operate within company premises. The dedicated reader-writer developed to achieve this latest objective is used by connecting it to existing POS cash registers. Management system functions have been enhanced to facilitate the direct deduction of purchase charges from payrolls when a smart ID card is waved over the reader-writer. This development improves user convenience as it means that company staff can complete their shopping needs in a simple and easy manner without the need to carry cash with them in the company.

At the same time, improvements have also been made in processing speed at canteen payment terminals and the operability of the management computer, including registering new menu items and products, and making sales confirmation.

DNP has adopted the new cashless payment system at three canteens and one convenience store operating on DNP property, and plans to roll the system out to other in-house facilities during FY 2016.

[DNP Cashless Payment System]

Apart from using smart ID cards to directly deduct purchase charges from payrolls and perform e-money payments, it is also possible to use membership cards in postpaid and prepaid payments, and payments using smart card-based bus and rail passes. The system is compatible with both FeliCa® and MIFARE® contactless smart cards.

  • Automatic checkout: In canteens the system works by reading IC tag information attached to trays that users place on a dedicated checkout register, automatically calculating charges and displaying them on a screen, then having users wave their ID cards over the reader-writer to complete purchases.
  • Self-checkout: a format allowing users to select items at unmanned counters and pay for purchases by waving ID cards over installed payment checkout terminals. Broad uses from single to multiple items.
  • Traditional cash register checkouts: register operators confirm purchase items with users settling their account by waving their ID cards over a reader-writer.
  • Canteen vouchers: When users purchase vouchers they can also select the items they want from the menu and pay by waving their ID cards over a reader-writer.
  • Vending machines: Purchases can be paid for by waving ID cards over smart card reader-writers attached to the vending machines.
