DNP Markets Image Processing Technology as an Embeddable Program

As a first step launches image clipping and facial attribute estimation libraries

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has bundled the image component process technology developed through its printing and photo print business, and from November 7 will market this as a computer program - or library - that can be embedded into products and services produced by individual companies.

To get this project underway, the Company has launched two libraries; the first facilitating high resolution clippings from images via just a simple operation, and the second rendering possible facial recognition of figures that appear in images along with estimations of gender and age.

[Two Embeddable Libraries]

Clipping Library

This library generates a high quality clipping mask, via rough designation of the subject's outline among the images, followed by high resolution clipping. By using the generated clipping mask, it is possible to produce a composite image that does not look out of place when combined with other image data. The following uses have been found to be effective.

  • Integration into entertainment devices, such as those at theme parks and arcades.
  • Integration into applications for smart phones that run simulations, such as those involving costumes or hair styles.

Facial Attribute Estimation Library

This library works by recognizing human faces that appear in images. It targets portrait images photographed from the front, and is capable of estimating both gender, as well as age in 7 distinct age groups - below 10, those between 10 and 20, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and those above the age of 60. The following uses have been found to be effective.

  • Integrating into digital signage that displays ads targeting specific gender and age groups, and product recommendations.
  • Integrating into research tools that ascertain the specific gender and age group of those visiting retail outlets and automatically measure service usage conditions.

[Forward Looking Events]

DNP will offer this program to companies engaged in digital image processing, and those developing digital image processing programs and software on a broad basis, aiming for sales of approximately 300 million yen over the next 3-years.

DNP will also push ahead with the bundling of other component technology to boost product lineup.
