DNP Creates Resource Recycling System for the Reproduction of Paper Emitted in the Product Manufacture Cycle
Paper recycled in-house as FSC(R) Recycle Certified Coasters
Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has created a resources recycling system to allow for the reuse of paper, such as margins and surplus portions generated during the manufacturing process to be reproduced as products in DNP Group factories.
As the initial step in this new venture, DNP has launched operations at the Tanabe Plant in Kyoto, which manufactures packaging materials, and has successfully reproduced coasters for use when offering visitors beverages in reception rooms at DNP installations throughout Japan.
The challenge of natural resource depletion in line with expanded consumption of resources and energy, has raised its head in recent years, while at the same time, CO2 emission reductions, and the conservation of natural resources have also become critical issues on a global basis.
As a result, in order to prevent indiscriminate deforestation, many companies, beginning with makers of daily goods and foods, are promoting the use of sustainable paper. To achieve this, companies are actively adopting eco-friendly, and recycled, paper, in their products and sales promotional materials. Eco-friendly paper refers to forest certified paper, which is paper using timber forested from appropriately maintained forests.
To date, DNP has promoted resource recycling initiatives, such as Improved Resource Productivity, and the Promotion of the Reuse of Unwanted Materials targeting the creation of a sustainable society. At the same time, the Company has also actively promoted the use of forest certified paper and recycled paper aiming for sustainable forest resources usage.
DNP Resource Recycling System
The resource recycling system is operated in cooperation with Nissey Sangyo Co., Ltd., the first pulp manufacturer in the Asian region to be accredited with FSC®1 certification in the recycle pulp area. Paper emitted from factories is reused as raw materials in newly created products. At DNP, the paper used as raw materials in company plants is managed, and as a result, it is possible to ensure traceability of resources throughout all processes, from emission at factories to reproduction. It also accredits such resources with forest certification when reproducing.
- Flow of Resource Recycling System
Collection of industrial waste paper emitted from DNP factories
Pulping of industrial waste paper
Manufacture of recycled paper with that pulp
Reproduction at DNP factories using that recycled paper as raw material
Recycling system that takes material emitted in-house and uses them in-house
Facilitates the manufacture of higher value added products, such as those with forest certification
As the initial case study employing the resource recycle system, DNP has successfully reproduced coasters for use when offering visitors beverages in reception rooms at DNP installations throughout Japan. The coasters are manufactured based on old paper emitted from DNP factories, which has been accredited with the FSC recycle mark. Looking ahead, DNP will expand the variety of products manufactured using the resource recycling system, and operate a variety of businesses not only on an in-house basis, but also at our client companies.
DNP aims to balance business growth with global environmental conservation, and will further promote initiatives targeting the realization of a sustainable society.
