Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd.
Nihon Unisys, Ltd

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) and Nihon Unisys, Ltd (Nihon Unisys), have commenced cooperation in the area of global brand prepaid cards that are experiencing sharp globally-based market growth.

As a first step, we will jointly develop a global brand prepaid card issuance and settlement management platform to be offered to card issuers via a cloud-based service. This newly developed platform will be combined with other services, such as card manufacturing, outsourcing of application form input operations etc., and card usage log-driven support. Sales activities will commence from April, and the one-stop service from card manufacturing through settlement management, BPO and marketing will be the first of its kind in Japan.

Background to Service Launch

Global brand prepaid cards refer to prepaid-format electronic settlement services that can be used on a global basis at merchants of the global payment brands, Visa, MasterCard and JCB. In principle, no application screening is required, and as there is also no age limit, the application process is simple. In addition, as it is impossible to use the card beyond the charge limit, such cards have the feature of facilitating easy expenditure management, and are expected to see sharp penetration among a broad age range of domestic consumers, and visitors from overseas. In particular, as the card business in Japan is characterized by numerous small-amount cash payments1 from a variety of countries, card issuers expect to see demand for global brand prepaid cards as a new payment means, and are putting efforts into the development of partner companies.

DNP boasts the top domestic track record in the provision of global brand prepaid cards2, and has joined hands with Intelligent Wave Inc., a DNP Group company involved in system development specializing in the settlement area, and Nihon Unisys which boasts mission critical system development and operations knowhow developed in the financial and aircraft industries. In conjunction, we have developed a cloud-based universal settlement platform for global brand prepaid cards to answer the expectations of card issuers for global brand prepaid cards. DNP and Nihon Unisys will jointly offer this service to card issuers.

Payment Platform

The platform offers basic functions, such as the necessary card numbers management, cardholder management, and sales and cash balance management. These are combined with uniquely customized functions by the card issuer or partner company, such as store connections, charge formats and points tie-ups, in a cloud-based service.

The features of the settlement platform as follows;

By offering the payment platform in a cloud-based service, it is possible to reduce startup costs, compared to the adoption of in-house developments, and also to commence services with just a short lead time.

The platform is provided in a format that combines pre-packaged shared functions, and customized individual requirements for each card issuer.

The platform is compatible with Visa, MasterCard and JCB.

The new service conforms to PCI-DSS3, and operates in a highly secure environment.

Apart from performing outsourcing operations, such as card manufacturing and application inputs, DNP and Nihon Unisys will offer the service in combination with marketing support, such as customer transfer services to partner outlets that accept the prepaid cards. This will lead to improved customer service for card issuers and retail distribution companies, such as those offering tie up services.

Looking Ahead

DNP and Nihon Unisys will focus on measures to improve customer services at card issuers and partner companies, aiming for a service that presents a win-win situation for both consumers and companies, in an attempt to contribute to the promotion of cashless payments4 operated under joint private - public sector initiatives in Japan. Looking ahead, we plan further service enhancements, via cooperation on other services, such as debit systems, and CLO5. Jointly, DNP and Nihon Unisys will offer this service to retailers, distributors and financial institutions, aiming for 30 billion yen in sales in the four year period to FY 2018.

DNP and Nihon Unisys entered into a business alliance in August 2012, and are promoting Marketing Platform, a common strategy targeting corporate change whereby marketing is conducted on a cross-company and cross-industry basis. We are focused on next-generation payments, digital advertising, digital contents and digital commerce as priority areas, and will engage with this newly launched service as part of the next-generation payments area. DNP and Nihon Unisys also intend to launch a variety of services to advance corporate marketing efforts in a sequential manner.
