DNP in Full Scale Launch of Aluminum Panels for Interior or Exterior Use

Two series launch, expressing wood or aluminum textures

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce the full scale launch in April of an aluminum panel with a high quality sense for interior or exterior use, and is capable of expressing wood or stone textures. The new panel is designed to target large scale buildings, such as public facilities and complexes.

The new aluminum panel comes in two series, one expressing natural materials, such as wood or stone, and another that capitalizes on the metallic roots of the aluminum base. And in addition to general-purpose designs rigorously selected from DNP design data, the Company will also provide custom made solutions based on original design of color innovations to match client needs.

Also, in line with this announcement, DNP is also pleased to open a website introducing examples of the work of the well-known Japanese architect, Kengo Kuma, along with an interview. For further information, please visit http://www.dnp.co.jp/arttec (Japanese only).

[Background]

In recent years, we have seen growing demand from large scale buildings, such as public facilities, hotels and commercial facilities for the use of natural materials, such as wood and stone alongside metals, for both interior and exterior use, in order to express a relaxed atmosphere, a sense of presence, or the feeling of luxury. When directly using wood materials, however, significant limitations exist, such as durability and flammability along with strength and size. And as stone is heavy, it is necessary to consider construction methods, and fall-prevention methods. At the same time, metal materials have the tendency to undergo rapid deterioration, even if subjected to anti-rust treatments.

In order to overcome these challenges, DNP has applied its unique printing to metals, and using aluminum panels that are light and do not rust, has developed an aluminum paneling for interior and exterior uses that reproduces the high class sense of wood, stone alongside metal.

The newly developed aluminum paneling has developed a strong reputation after being adopted at Tamagawa Takashimaya Shopping Center in Tokyo, and the Joy Village Kamonomiya in Kanagawa Prefecture, both designed and supervised by Kengo Kuma & Associates, as well as at Charleston International Airport, S.C. On the back of this track record, DNP will commence full scale sales of the new aluminum paneling.

[New Product Features]

This new product has been coated using a baking process with superior workability, meaning it can be applied in a variety of uses. The aluminum paneling also helps reduce construction burdens, and produce high grade construction designs. In addition to the general purpose designs rigorously selected by DNP, it is also possible to create innovative designs that do not exist in the natural materials, themselves, in line with customer needs. As a result, the new aluminum paneling is effective in expressing new spatial relationships that have not been seen to date. The paneling has not only superior design features, but also superior non-combustible performance (certification number NM-2698) and weatherability performance (Arizona EMMAQUA testing 300 days).

[Looking Ahead]

DNP will market this newly developed product, mainly to architectural design companies and construction companies, aiming for sales of 2.5 billion yen in FY 2017. And in addition to promoting the development of new designs, DNP will also promote global development of the new aluminum paneling to meet overseas demand, beginning with the US.
