Spansion and DNP Launch Field Experiments of Indoor Positioning Using Spansion's Energy Harvesting Power Management Integrated Circuits

Spansion Inc. and Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) have jointly launched field experiments of indoor positioning services using Bluetooth® compatible dedicated beacons mounted with Spansion's energy harvesting power management integrated circuits (PMICs)1. Field experiments of O2O (Online to Offline) services are also being conducted.
In the "iBeacon2 Project jointly conducted with Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (JAL), dedicated PMIC beacon modules integrating Spansion's ICs (USB power supply type) have been installed at the Haneda Airport Terminal-1 departure lounge along with Narita, Itami, Kansai, New Chitose, Fukuoka, Naha, Sendai, Komatsu, Hiroshima, Matsuyama, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima airports. Field experiments were commenced October 9, 2014 of a distribution service providing flight status, boarding gate and boarding time information for "JAL Countdown" application users.
Additionally, in cooperation with Aeon Mall Co., Ltd., DNP will launch a separate field experiment installing Spansion-powered battery-free beacon modules from the carpark to the entrance area. These modules use light-driven solar battery panels, and are designed to distribute a digital floor guide to dedicated applications for smart phones. DNP plans to implement more field experiments at a variety of commercial facilities using the Spansion-based battery-free beacon modules.
DNP's iBeacon-based information distribution service has been expanded for uses including not only activities where sightseers and visitors to spots such as temples and railway stations collect souvenir stamp seals, but also for issuing digital coupons, map information for commercial facilities and the distribution of product information. Looking ahead, it is hoped that iBeacon based information distribution services will be introduced at large scale facilities such as shopping malls, theme parks and art galleries along with sight-seeing spots.
At the same time, in line with the increase in iBeacon compatible services, it is also expected that upkeep and maintenance burdens and costs related to beacon modules installed at such facilities will become a significant burden for operators.

1: PMIC: Spansion's family of energy harvesting PMICs enable the development of eco-friendly IoT devices, which can be operated without battery or fuel. The PMICs implemented in the beacons can effectively extract energy from both sunlight and vibration. The power source is provided by the solar battery panels, which are embedded within the module and are half the size of a business card. The solar battery can be operated continuously using the amount of light equal to standard interior lighting used in everyday activities.
