DNP Launches B2B Sales of Livescribe 3 Smartpen

Envisaged uses in data sharing

Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) is pleased to announce the September 5, 2014 launch of Business-to-Business (B2B) sales of the LivescribeTM 3 Smartpen, a digital pen system produced by Livescribe, Inc. of Oakland, CA, that allows the user to instantly save handwritten text or diagrams as digital data with an iPad® or iPhone®. DNP will engage in sales promotion activities, in conjunction with Daiwabo Information System Co., Ltd., a company that has a sales track record in B2B ICT-related product sales.

The Livescribe 3 Smartpen is a digital tool that allows the user to instantly save handwritten text or diagrams as digital data with an iPad or iPhone. And apart from being able to synchronize ambient sound and record it as text data, it is also possible to update this data to Evernote®1 or OneNote®2 for data sharing purposes. The Livescribe 3 Smartpen has developed a reputation for being highly convenient, and a total of 1 million pens in the Livescribe Smartpen series have been sold to consumers around the world.

At the same time, many Japanese companies and organizations use the iPad with the objective of boosting operational efficiency, and by adopting Livescribe 3 Smartpen further efficiencies can be expected, by recording meeting and business negotiation memos along with the audio of opinion exchanges, and sharing this data with the participants. In order to answer such needs, DNP will cooperate with Livescribe, Inc. as the first global B2B sales agent for the Livescribe 3 Smartpen.

[Overview of Livescribe 3 Smartpen]

The Livescribe 3 Smartpen uses digital pen technology, whereby a small camera built into the tip of the pen reads off microscopic dot patterns printed on paper in line with the movements of the pen when writing text or drawing diagrams to capture the handwriting. By downloading the dedicated application Livescribe+ to an iPad, and performing pairing with the pen (by executing connection settings between devices with Bluetooth®), handwritten text and diagrams are automatically forwarded to an iPad, and stored as digital data. Livescribe+ is equipped with a text recognition function, meaning handwritten text can be transferred into text data via a simple maneuver of the coordination data.

Also, by touching the tip of the pen on the "record" button displayed in the notebook margin, the iPad recording functions are activated, allowing for ambient sound to be recorded, connections to be made to handwritten text, and both recorded. Apart from being able to forward handwritten text and audio via e-mail, it is also possible to upload both to Evernote or OneNote.

The newly marketed product is available in two types: professional and standard editions. The professional edition comes with a dedicated leather covered journal, while the standard edition offers a ring note pad. The professional edition includes a 1-year Evernote Premium license, which is not offered with the standard edition.
